Dry skin is a very common complaint heard in our practice during the winter months. With so many products on the market and recommendations from advertisements on social media it can be overwhelming to know what you should be using to treat dry skin
Here is what dermatology providers recommend you look for:
1
Gentle, fragrance-free skin care products:
Some skin care products are too harsh for dry, sensitive skin. We recommend looking for products labeled “fragrance-free.”
2
Cream or ointment (instead of lotion):
Creams and ointments add more moisture to the skin and are more effective in treating dry, cracked skin. They help penetrate thickened, inflamed skin better. Look for one with the following ingredients:
Glycerin
Hyaluronic acid
Lactic acid
Lanolin
Mineral oil
Petrolatum
Shea butter
Jojoba oil
Don’t forget to apply your moisturizer several times a day. It is best to apply your moisturizer when your skin is still damp after washing your hands, taking a shower or bath or whenever your skin feels dry.
3
Lip balm or petrolatum jelly:
Choose a lip balm that feels good on your lips. We recommend Aquaphor, Vaseline or Dr. Dan’s Cortibalm.
4
Avoid triggers that may worsen dry skin:
Such as frequent washing with harsh soaps, using super hot water and contact with fragrances and dyes.
If these pro tips are not enough to help restore your dry skin, schedule an appointment with one of our board-certified providers, 715-553-5066.
